Is the area safe?

Yes. Portugal has a long-standing reputation as one of the safest countries in Europe, and rural Alentejo — a region of small towns, farms and estates — is among its calmest areas.

That general picture is reinforced by Apaulinha's own circumstances. The estate covers 12 hectares of private land near Grândola, a quiet municipal town rather than a tourist hub, and it is permanently inhabited: two members of staff live on the property year-round, so the estate is never left empty, even outside the season. The undulating terrain and the low density of the surrounding countryside — protected by strong planning restrictions — mean there is simply very little through-traffic of any kind.

Why it matters: safety rarely features in a brochure, but it shapes how freely one lives — whether children roam the grounds, whether a villa can be left for months without worry. Here it can be taken largely for granted, which is itself a luxury.
