How energy-efficient are the villas?

The Apaulinha villas are designed for low energy demand: a high-performance insulated envelope with treated thermal bridges, conditioned by reversible heat pumps distributing through low-temperature underfloor heating.

Efficiency starts with the fabric. Roof insulation uses high-performance rigid panels; interior vertical insulation is provided by Fermacell technical panels; and thermal bridges — the weak points where structures typically leak energy — are treated throughout. The in-situ concrete structure contributes thermal mass, smoothing temperature swings between the Alentejo's warm days and cooler nights.

The active systems are then sized to a building that barely needs them. Reversible heat pumps supply both heating and cooling from a single efficient source, and low-temperature underfloor distribution is inherently economical: because the emitting surface is the entire floor, the water circulating through it needs only modest heating, which is precisely where heat pumps perform at their best. Envelope and system are matched rather than merely co-installed.

Why it matters: energy efficiency in a second home is not an abstraction — it determines running costs during long periods of occupation and short ones alike, and it underwrites comfort in a climate with over 300 days of sunshine a year. A villa that holds its temperature by design, rather than by consumption, is cheaper to run, quieter to live in, and better placed for whatever energy standards the coming decades bring.
